Back in a UK consultancy, I had had a hard time working firstly in New Business Start-ups for an ex-colonial type who still thought he was hunting rhino, then for a dishonest HR Consultancy Manager who tried to steal the company’s clients. Upon his departure I was transferred to Head Office, reporting directly to the tyrannical Managing Director.
As I doodled dreamily over my desk pad, he shouted, „Sandford!” What are your objectives for today?”
„Well, I er, I, um, hm.” This routine continued daily until I was 23, ready with an immediate response but he was straight on to the next strategy. At 20’clock each day, often even when in his own office, he’d call through the wall.
„Sandford! How many of your objectives have you achieved?”
I learnt to respond appropriately each day until I finally ran out of patience.
„Today, I’m writing protest songs.” I replied.
He looked at me sharply wondering whether to sack me on the spot but then instead, starting smiling. The point had been made on both sides. In fact, he turned out not to be such a tyrant and I learnt a lot from him about knowing what you want and delivering the goods. It was very loose-tight organisation and you could do your own thing as long as you were successful. The Chairman’s favourite saying was, „The reward is, you get to stay.
„There was a strong macho coaching style based on role-modelling with the model being Bruce Willis. Sadly, the only thing we have in common is hair loss.
Now in Warsaw, I’ve been adopted by Pani Retoryka. Her style is quite different. I don’t even report to her directly but she seems to enjoy our little chats. I think I once asked her advice but somehow she turns every question upside down and returns it with interest. She stares like an owl, through great big eyes which are magnified even more by her goldfish bowl glasses.

Half an hour later, I feel like I’ve been abducted by aliens and put through a battery of tests to search for signs of intelligence. Each conversation although friendly is like a thorough selection interview and I’m never quite sure if I’ve got the job or not.
Coaching is a term that is widely used and abused. You can have a volleyball coach, an exercise coach, a life coach, diet coach, voice coach and a coaching coach. Coaching can be hands on, on the job, on-line, off-line, on demand, fast track, ad hoc or just in time but really – what’s it all about?
Whether assigned by the company or just happening naturally, a coach is someone who takes an interest. They care about your development and believe in helping you to realise your potential. They are good at asking questions and like a small child, will keep asking, „why?” forever, until you reach the bottom of „why?” They are reflective and have a mirror but it’s a special one which they can move around like a barber to show you part of your head you never saw before and probably never wanted to because of the widening Bruce Willis bald patch. Yet, they can leave you feeling strong, hopeful and inspired, wanting to rush out to score another goal. Some push and some pull, some stare whilst others shout through walls but weather are they tyrants or sages, I welcome them all.
